Homoeopathy is currently used in over 80 countries. It has legal recognition as an individual system of medicine in 42 countries and is recognized as a part of complementary and alternative medicine in 28 countries .

World Health Organisation supports homeopathy

2003-2004: WHO issued a 40-page draft on homoeopathy, entitled Homoeopathy: review and analysis of reports on controlled clinical trials, claimed that the “majority” of peer-reviewed scientific papers published over the past 40 years “have demonstrated that homoeopathy is superior to placebo in placebo-controlled trials and is equivalent to conventional medicines in the treatment of illnesses, in both humans and animals.”
In addition, the WHO stated in their Journal “The World Health Forum” that “Homeopathy seems well suited for use in rural areas where the Infrastructure, Equipment, and Drugs needed for Conventional Medicine cannot be provided.”

The WHO states that Homeopathy is the second most used medical system internationally, with over $1 Billon in expenditures for such therapy. In the United states, there are more than 500 physicians and 5000 non-physicians using Homoeopathy in clinical practice, and 2.5 million Americans currently use Homeopathic medicines – of which two-thirds are self-prescribed spending more than $250 million annually.

“The same issue of The Lancet featured a leak of the WHO draft report on homeopathy. The WHO document was apparently leaked to The Lancet by Dutch and Belgian doctors hostile to homeopathy; their comments and the (hostile) comments of Prof. Edzard Ernst of the University of Exeter were published. Dr Xiaorui Zhang, Traditional Medicine Coordinator of WHO, who is responsible for the report, was also interviewed, but declined to comment on a leaked, confidential draft.
This leak came only 2 days after The Times of London published, as its front page lead, a remarkably similar story: a leak of the Smallwood Enquiry on The Role of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the NHS commissioned by The Prince of Wales’ Foundation for Integrated Health. It is ironic that the editor of The Lancet, Dr Richard Horton, wrote to The Times accusing “Dr.” Ernst of having ‘broken every code of scientific behaviour’ for leaking the draft report of the Smallwood Enquiry (and incidentally describing complementary medicine as ‘a largely pernicious influence… preying on the fears and uncertainties of the sick’), while simultaneously doing the same to the WHO report in his own journal

At the General Hospital in Klagenfurt, Austria, children with cancer are treated with homeopathy along with conventional medicine. At another hospital in Austria, (KA Rudolfstiftung), homeopathy is used with newborns in the delivery room and intensive care units. Children with profound mental impairment receive homeopathic care in the Rzadkowo Welfare Centre in Poland. A study at Vinnitsa Medical University (Ukraine) atrial fibrillation was successfully treated using homeopathy. Finally, there was the heartening research of Dr. Nikolaus Hock in Munchen Germany, using homeopathy to treat depression. He presented two cases of people suffering from depression who got no relief from drugs in over two years. They were each cured in five weeks with homeopathic remedies (Aurum muriaticum and Alumina).

United Kingdom
The British Royal Family has been under homeopathic care since 1820 and there has always been a Royal Homeopathic Doctor. The post is currently held by Dr. Peter Fisher. Homeopathy has been available on the National Health Service in Britain since 1948. Then the Government pledged that homeopathy would continue to be available on the NHS, as long as there were “patients wishing to receive it and doctors willing to provide it”.

1990: According to The Times of London, homeopathy is now the fastest growing alternative therapy in Scotland. The numbers of Scots who have used homeopathic medicines have more than doubled from 1985 to 1990, increasing from 5% to 11%. Similarly, in 1985 23% of those Scots interviewed in 1985 said they would “seriously consider” going to a homeopath, and in 1990 this figure grew to 40%.

Homeopathy is recognized by government and receives support in all 4 sectors – education, research, drug development and health care services.
Homeopathy Education
Regular full time 5.5 years graduate medical degree [Bachelors in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS)] that includes one year compulsory internship (approx 4800 hours in total) with postings in every department of either college hospital or government hospital to which college is attached, is absolutely necessary for becoming qualified & to get license to practice homeopathy medicine in India. And to do regular full time M.D. in any one of the 7 specialisations (Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Pharmacy, Organon, Materia Medica, Repertory) of homeopathy medicine, you have to spend three more years after BHMS. Ph.D is also available after MD.
Presently 52 Universities (including Deemed Universities) in the Country are offering Courses in Homoeopathy [1]. Currently there are 183 homeopathy medical colleges in India offering BHMS (Maharashtra state has highest number of colleges, approx 25% of all colleges), out of which 1 is national institute, 31 state govt colleges, 7 govt-funded private colleges and 144 private colleges. Currently 38 colleges offer MD. In Gujarat, 17 Homoeopathic Medical Colleges are offering courses in Homoeopathy under affiliation to 6 Universities. In West Bengal, 12 Homoeopathic Medical Colleges are offering courses in Homoeopathy under affiliation to 01 University [1].

Human Resources
India has become the world leader in Homeopathy, with 2.24729 lakhs (2011) (85,000 in 1984) registered homeopath physicians (20% of all physicians), churns out no less than 13,000 homeopaths (12,371 got admission in BHMS and 1040 in M.D. in 2009) every year.
2009: 675 homeopathy doctors have been appointed in Gujarat under the National Rural Health Mission of the government of India, and 182 part-time government homeopathy dispensaries have been upgraded to full-time status

According to a recent AC Nielson survey, while 62 per cent of the current homeopathy users have never tried allopathy, 82 per cent of homeopathy users would not switch to conventional treatments.
Size of Homeopathy Market
2010: According to Wall Street Journal, by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) estimates, the homeopathy market is worth 26 billion rupees (€391 million) and growing at 25% a year.

Budget
A budget of €260 million of the AYUSH Department is available for homeopathy and much of it is spend on homeopathic research, education and health care

Expenditure on Homeopathy: Department of AYUSH has invested Rs. 678.97 crore (actual expenditure of the department) in 2009-10. The provisional actual expenditure for 2010-11 is 844.53 crore.
Exports
According to AYUSH 2010 report, Rs. 5.58 crores of homoeopathic medicines and Rs. 2.83 crores of biochemic medicines have been exported in 2009-10.

1993: The New England Journal of Medicine reported that 2.5 million Americans used homeopathic remedies and 800,000 patients visited homeopaths in 1990, and it has continued to grow.
From 1990 to 2000, sales of homeopathic products in the United States rose 1000% (Sayner-Flusche 2000). According to the National Center for Homeopathy, sales of homeopathic remedies in the US are over $300 million and are increasing by 12% per year. At an AMA meeting, Dr. J.N. McCormack of Kentucky, who was the driving force behind the 1903 re-organisation of the AMA, said: “We must admit that we never fought the homeopath on matters of principle. We fought him because he came into the community and got the business.”
